Cinco de Mayo Face Masks

05/02/2013 02:25 PM

Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner and although our family didn't grow up celebrating it every year, we are famliar with the celebration. After all, this is South Texas isn't it?  Since we are slowly incorporating Spanish lessons into our studies this year, I thought this would be a great opportunity to inject some culture into our lessons. Thus, this week we decided to talk about Cinco de Mayo and in the process, we thought it would be kind of fun to make some Mexican masks. We came up with a Mariachi boy and a Mexican girl, a Señorita.

Easter Fun with Cascarones

03/27/2013 08:10 PM

Do you make Cascarones for Easter? Ever since I was a little girl, I grew up making Cascarones. For those of you who don’t know cascarones are confetti filled Easter Eggs that you can use in your Easter Egg Hunts and then crack them on someone's head. They are totally fun and I’ve written about them in a little more detail before.  This past spring break, when I had four extra kids in my home, I thought it would be a fun and great way to pass the time and it was, until someone spilled the dye on my floors and my hubby got a little upset!

Visit the National Scouting Museum

03/21/2013 07:32 PM

With the very real threat of sequestration and with the reality that this one income household will be on an even tighter budget than before, our family decided to keep Spring Break pretty simple this year. Since we homeschool, we were able to get away for a couple of days before the heavy Spring Break season actually began. We took a very small trip to the DFW area to visit my two sisters and their families and while we were there, one of the the things we did was to head over to the National Scouting Museum in Irving, TX. If you think that visiting a Boy Scout Museum is boring, then let me tell you plain and simply, you’re wrong! We took in some wonderful Norman Rockwell art, we played some fun games, we explored scouting history, and we even got to help out in a scavenger hunt.

Duke Talks with American Heritage Girls

03/20/2013 03:37 PM

Last night our American Heritage Girls troop took a field trip to our local Petsmart as part two of working on our Pet Care Badge. Part one is here. Petsmart was great at working with our girls and providing lots of valuable information from different types of pets, pet care, safe and proper pet handling of pets, nutrition, health, and more, they also introduced us to one of their regular patrons to the store and with him, was his Great Dane, Duke, and let me tell you Duke was an amazing animal! After taking the time to meet the girls, Duke did something truly amazing that had my youngest, who stayed home with allergies, wishing she had gone. Duke actually said to them “I Love You!” See for yourself this very sweet pet and his incredible talent.
