Homeschooling Groups can be a wonderful asset to many homeschooling families. For a newbie homeschooler, a homeschooling group can be one of your best resources for a variety of reasons. If you're out there trying to determine whether a homeschool group is right for you, consider this: Do you want it for socialization purposes or for educational purposes?
As you're determining which homeschool group, if any, is right for you, try to establish what it is you want from a group. Are you looking for ways to socialize your children? Are you looking for other people whom you can connect with? Are you just unsure of what you're doing and want a place where you can bounce ideas or questions off of? Once you've established the answers to these questions, try to look at the different groups available in your area. Join them if you can and try to make the meetings or event dates that are planned. Groups take on so many forms and are usually formed by volunteer homeschool parents, so it may take a while before you feel comfortable with a group of your liking.
For the most part, many homeschool groups try to offer both an avenue for socialization as well as education. Many will plan events throughout the year that are purely social in make up. In addition to those, they may plan events for venues that combine educational activities with fun. Some groups are religious in their make-up, others are purely secular. Some do not meet throughout the summer, some meet all year long. Many times, these groups may offer extra-curricular activities for their members such as a Chess Club, a Science Fair Group, a Speech and Debate Team, or Co-op classes.
In addition, they are a great way to meet other families with something in common; that is homeschooling. Whatever your needs and wants are from a homeschooling group, remember, it is up to you to put something into it, to get something out of it as well. Be open to meeting new people, visiting new places, and volunteering in your chosen group. Eventually you'll find one that fits your needs.
By the way, does it matter if your homeschool group is purely social in nature? That is entirely up to you, but it's something I ask myself often. What is best? On the one hand, you want your children to attend educational activities, but on the other, why can't they just be kids and play? Hmmm....just a few more thoughts I'd throw your way.
