Imaginitive Play
Never underestimate the power of imaginative play. It makes kids happy, very happy. I see it every day. Sometimes kids don’t get a chance to be kids. There’s always the pressure of school, homework, being somewhere at a certain time and then there’s the pressure that we parents may put on them, not necessarily intentionally, but more from the pressures of life that we feel too. It’s not always easy to just relax and let kids be kids. But I have to say, I’m so thankful that even in this beautiful and crazy world we live in and in this hectic pace we sometimes keep, the kids always find time for imaginative play.
Here are some of their favorites: ‘family,’ ‘fashion/talent show,’ ‘the puppy game (a family of puppies that have human lives),’ and then there’s stuff where they are characters from some of the favorite toys like ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Lego,’ and yes, even ‘Barbie’.
Sure, some of you may judge or question some of these toys and granted they may not be the ‘best’ for the children because of whatever message they might be sending and I hear you. For our family, it’s not the messages these toys send that we focus on. For my girls, ‘Barbie’ is just a doll, a pretty one. It doesn’t mean they don’t have other dolls. For my son, ‘Star Wars’ is imaginative. It’s good vs. bad, it’s space. He doesn’t like the ‘bad’ or ‘evil’ characters he likes the action, and the capability and maneuverability of the ships.
The point is, the toys they have are just tools that they use to build on their imagination and for that, I’m o.k. with them. Their imaginations are incredible and I’m always in awe when I hear them playing. They seem happy and that makes me happy.
