Christi Family is a blog and local family resource for Corpus Christi and surrounding areas of the coastal bend.Created by a family of five, we blog about everything that matters to us. We invite you to read about our journey as we catalogue our thoughts about Family Matters, Fun Matters, Home Matters, Faith Matters, School Matters, and other things that Just Matter (at least to us). We’re exploring Corpus Christi and are providing you with what we find. Whether you’re looking for local resources, wanting to find local events geared just for families, or are wanting a  quick reference guide on everything local, this might just be the place for you and yours.  We’re filling our pages with resources for mom’s, kids, visitors, newbies, and families in general. As we continue our adventures in life, we’ll also continue our exploration of what we can do with this site and hopefully you'll benefit! Our focus is family, it’s that simple. You won’t find business meetings listed on our calendars, instead you’ll see calendars for families, toddlers, or just parents. It’s your choice!   Join the fun! Let us know what you’d like to see or what you think we should explore! We’ll share our thoughts!
Is 70 the new 50?

Is 70 the new 50? I think so! We just got back from taking a break from Corpus Christi living and the spring break holiday and one of the first things we did on our time away was celebrate my mother-in-law's 70th birthday party. Judging from some of her gifts and a few other things, I'm here to tell you that 70 is definitely the new 50!

Our first stop on our trip away from Corpus Christi was to central Texas where my mother-in-law and most of my husband's family live. We were there not only to visit 'grandma,' but to also celebrate her 70th birthday!

We got there just in time to join the rest of the family (another son, three daughters, their children, and significant others).  On the menu for the day was: Shrimp Boil, new potatoes, Bread, Corn on the cob, Salad, a Cheesecake Factory Red Velvet Cheesecake, and Vanilla Cake. We spent a lovely afternoon reminiscing on old family photos, the current 'happenings' in each others lives and just having a great old time. The children enjoyed jumping on the trampoline, playing with their cousins, and of course singing happy birthday which went something like this:

Happy Birthday to you,

Happy Birthday to you,

Happy Birthday to you, Kathy, mom, grandma...,

Happy Birthday to you!

But onto the point of this post, and that is, that I believe 70 is the new 50, well, at least as far as my mother-in-law is concerned. Here's what led me to believe that way:

  • She's very active(volunteers at church, at the food bank, plays bunko on a regular basis, and is not afraid to drive long distances by herself.
  • She exercises regularly
  • She's been known to run bases with her grandkids
  • Enjoys a good trip shopping, to the movies, eating out, the theatre, and even takes in her grandkids Tae Kwon Do tournaments.
  • She likes to travel, even though she doesn't always have the time.
  • She watches some of her grandkids on a regular basis and isn't tired of them yet.
  • She drives a sporty SUV.
  • Her favorite past-time is playing on her laptop.
  • She doesn't leave home without her iphone.
  • She worked out a deal with her neighbor - some of his cows in her pasture and he'll take care of the fields. Pretty savvy compromise if you ask me. She doesn't have to try to manage the acreage on her own saving her tons of money.
  • Plus, on her birthday, her top gifts were itunes and a toaster oven, a white one to be exact!

So, there you have it. When my kids asked how old grandma was going to be before our trip, we said 'seventy'. They said, 'wow, grandma's old.' I say they were very wrong. Grandma's quite young if you ask me!

Happy 70th Birthday to my mother-in-law. May God bless you with many more wonderful years!
