Supplemental Lenten Lesson Resources            02/19/2010 11:32 PM

If you're Catholic and want to supplement your lessons on the ligturgical season of Lent, here's a few resources we have found online that we'd like to share with you.

  • Holy Heroes Lenten Adventures: We first learned about Holy Heroes during the season of Advent. During that time, they had the Holy Heroes Advent Adventures. Since our family is part of the local Catholic homeschool group and we were participating in the Jesse tree ornament exchange, I was looking for additional resources on Advent online and I happen to stumble upon them. I'm so glad I did. I signed us up via e-mail for the Advent Adventures and needless to say I was thrilled. Our kids really enjoyed the series of videos information, and activities. Now, during Lent, we're once again enjoying their resources. Three days a week we get an e-mail with a link to their Holy Heroes Lenten Adventure videos. The videos feature a family of children that discuss what Lent is, stories, questions and answers about Lent. They also have tips and ideas of ways to do penance, give alms, and the like. Lent has just started, but it has already been a plus in our lives. In addition, they have acivity sheets, coloring sheets, and extra resources such as an audio rosary that can be done. Holy Heroes is a business that sells resources for families and parishes, but happen to provide these 'Adventure' series e-mails and suggestions free of charge!

  • CatholicMom.com- A huge resource for Catholic families. You can find lessons on just about anything related to the Catholic faith on this site. One of the things I noticed on their site was their resources on the Way of the Cross devotion (Stations of the Cross). It's an incredible way to introduce to your little ones the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ. In addition, you can find lessons on Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Easter, and much more.

  • Faith & Family - Great blog with all sorts of resources for Catholic families. Just type in 'Lent,' 'Lenten,' or anything else and many articles will come up. One imparticular is the post from last year on 'The Top 10 Lenten Observances for Children.' It has some great ideas on ways to get your children involved in Lent.

  • Bread on the Waters Website - You can find some really useful and excellent links for kids on Lent on this site. Specifically, look at the links on their home page for children. Each of the resources goes into good detail and helps explain everything in terms easier for children to follow. I can definitely see using this site for a lesson with my children.

  • CatholicCulture.org Lent page - has everything from crafts, songs, and resources for everything about Lent.

All of these mentioned are excellent supplemental resources for the study of Lent. Of course, your own knowledge, customs, and family traditions offer the best example for your children as well as your local parish.
