Look what slithered in our backyard            05/08/2010 12:44 AM

'Did you see what was in the backyard?' That was the first thing I heard when my husband came home from work today. 'It was huge.' That was the second thing I heard. 'No,' I said, 'What is it?'

His eyes were big, at least bigger than mine on any given day, and he was grinning from ear to ear. My curiosity was peaked. So, I got up from the computer and followed him to the backyard. There it was, and let me tell you it was like, 'EW,' 'OMG,' and 'Wow' all at the same time.....a snake skin!

It was longer than our dog, Owen.

It wasn't from a poisonous snake. My husband showed me the round head from the skin.

But nonetheless, it was from a snake!

Can you tell, I'm not fond of snakes! Especially, this one. It is close to home (or at least was when it shed it's skin), and if you can't tell, it was rather long! Snakes always scare me! I'm guessing it stems from my childhood. Let me explain.

My parents built our house from a one room shack. It was a decent sized home and it fit all of my family. We are many. It's important to note that although it was considered average for most homes at the time, it was indeed built from a one room shack. A shack that had snakes under the floorboards.

Now our home growing up, although decent in size, was for the most part, a very pleasant home. I have fond memories of it. I also have not so fond memories. This is one of the not so fond memories of our childhood home.

Every year, when it started to get warm, we were careful not to lay on our living room floor. The reason, little silver snakes would crawl out from under the carpet!

Yes, it's true, and it was scary! They never hurt us, and they always looked like small babies and I'm not kidding when I tell you that we would keep a jar of them throughout the summer to see how many we would catch that year!

Isn't that horrible?  I know, I know...

It is also true that every year my dad would be out battling a large snake or two in the yard, and once, they even found one under my brother's mattress! YIKES!

I am not fond of snakes! Did I say that already? In Corpus Christi you always have wonder if they are poisonous or not. Rattlers and Coral snakes have been common sightings in certain places around here. Most of the time, I realize, the snakes in our yards are usually not poisonous, but that doesn't mean they don't make my skin crawl! The thought of it slithering past my feet is a little unsettling.

Again, I think that is something that stems from my childhood! I blame my whole reaction to snakes on that! O.k., well maybe not my whole reaction, but close enough!
