Sickness and Homeschooling

One of the best things about homeschooling your own children is that when they are sick, you're in control. There is no school nurse calling you to tell you to pick up your child, there's no time clock or worry about when he can go back to school, there's no worry about making sure you have a doctor's excuse,  there's no worry about missing out on your own work day, and there's no stress that comes from feeling like you need to get caught up on stuff when it's all said and done.

For the most part, homeschooling gives you the freedom to choose what gets done, when, and how much. Sure, some states have strict guidelines, some have soft ones, some curriculum programs you might use may require you to turn in work on a weekly basis, some not, but if you're like me and probably the majority of homeschoolers, then you're ultimately in control.

Even more is that when your child is sick and needs you, you are there. There's no school nurse, there's no waiting for attention, there's no having to sit through classes with a throbbing headache or a sour stomache. All there is their mom or dad, their pillow, their bed, their comfy p.j.'s. There's homemade chicken soup and crackers and there's rest, plenty of it.  Plus there's no pressure to get back to school quickly 'so you don't miss anything and don't fall behind.'

The truth is that when your child is sick, how much is he going to pay attention anyway to a lesson? That's the last thing on his mind and with homeschooling that shouldn't be a worry at all. What should be is his health and making sure he's o.k. The beauty of homeschooling is that when your child is finally feeling better, he'll probably get more done and be back on pace before you know it without all the added pressures of meeting a time clock, an attendance record, or anything like that.
